COUNCIL GET TOUGH ON INCONSIDERATE CYCLIST ON PAVEMENTS
Following a number of complaints the Town Council has decided to get tough on cyclists who blatantly disregard the cycling regulations on Town Centre pavements and footways in the Civic Centre area.
The Accredited Community Safety Officers have recently been targeting the areas following complaints by elderly people that they had nearly been knocked over by inconsiderate cyclist hurtling through the area. Town Clerk, Derek Biggs said “there is no excuse to cycle through the area which is used extensively by elderly people and young children who do not expect to have to dodge high speed bikes charging along the paths. They only need to push their bikes for a very short distance”.
The Accredited Community Safety Officers have already issued several £50 fixed penalty notices, given yellow cards to a number of young cyclist and warned a considerable number of other persons. The Council hopes that the message will get through that Town Centre pavements and paths used by pedestrians are totally unsuitable for cyclist and cause danger.
